Living with Paint: Sandy's new family room (Part 3, "To paper or to paint")

What did Sandy end up doing in her new family room?

After her hopes for wallpaper were dashed by her husband and sons, Sandy decided to stencil and paint faux wood. She still wanted the look of wallpaper and the warmth of paneling. Here's how she compromised with her family. She turned to a decorative artist to get the look and feel she wanted.

A Secret Garden

by Patrick Shields

Her dream was to create an English cottage garden. Hummingbirds, butterflies, and beautiful spring flowers. Her reality? A postage stamp backyard with a ten foot cinder block retainer wall.

Miriam was a do-it-yourselfer and she loved to garden. But the task of transforming her backyard seemed overwhelming. She decided to get some advice and called me about what she could do with her cinder block view. She explained what she wanted, that she enjoyed doing the work but was stumped on how to turn the ugly wall of concrete into a backdrop for her English garden.

I suggested she begin purchasing stencils and stamps of flowers, insects and birds as she made her rounds through the craft stores she loves to browse through when time allowed. Once she got her materials together, I would give a her jump-start, a one-day lesson on mural design. Part of the lesson would include how to apply the stencils and stamps to make the flowers, birds and insects appear hand painted, not stenciled. With one day of my help and several pleasant days in her backyard, Miriam created the beginnings of her private secret garden.

Next time we’ll talk about how to select wallpaper for kitchens and bathrooms.
